Anglo-Saxon Coins

Discovered in the fall of 1967 when two schoolboys found some scattered coins in a field near the bank of the river Wharfe, the Bolton Percy Hoard yielded nearly 1800 bronze coins from the mid 9th century AD. This was probably part of an earlier, unrecorded hoard discovered in the area in 1846 containing an additional 2000 coins. It is believed these 4,000 Northumbrian coins were buried prior to a Viking attack on the region in 866 AD.
